What Exactly Do I Receive If I Am Approved For SSD Or SSI Benefits?

Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits are monthly payments which you will receive for as long as you are unable to work. The amount is calculated by your age, how long you have worked and the amount you earned in Social Security covered employment.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are cash payments to help cover the necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter. The amount varies from state to state and you must meet certain income and available resource requirements to qualify.

Depending on your situation, you may qualify for both SSD and SSI benefits. You may also qualify for Medicare or Medicaid after a certain amount of time in the program, depending on which benefits you receive.

What Can I Expect If I’m On SSD Or SSI Benefits?

You will receive payments as long as you need them. At some point, if you decide to try to return to work or become self-employed, you will have a certain period in which you will continue to receive benefits.

After you reach the end of that period, or once you are earning enough money that your work is considered substantial gainful activity or SGA, your payments will stop. However you will have a grace period of five years to get your benefits back, to make sure you can continue to work.
