Stages of a Social Security Disability or SSI Claim

1. There are several stages to the SSD / SSI claim and appeal process. Most people file their initial claim on their own.
2. If your initial claim is denied, you can file for a reconsideration of your case. You have a limited time to ask for reconsideration of your case. This is an excellent time to involve an attorney.
3. If you are denied at this stage, we can request a hearing. It is extremely important to involve an attorney before you go to that hearing. If we are going to make a difference in the outcome of your case, this is the best time to do it.
4. If you are denied at this stage we can bring an appeal to the Appeals Council for an administrative review. I only handle appeals for clients I represented at the hearing stage.
5. The final stage of appeal is a judicial review in federal court.
